Life without kindergarten??

Today, June 8, 2011, the Star Advertiser in Honolulu, Hawaii printed an article that highlighted the Department of Education’s recent budget cuts that included the possibility of cutting kindergarten.  Cutting kindergarten!  If you would have presented this to me say, 30 years ago, I would have been, “oh…ok…maybe not such a bad idea” because my only memories of kindergarten was sharing car magazines with my friends, getting yelled at by the cafeteria lady for talking (really?!?!), and yes, nap time.

Times have changed.  My son just completed kindergarten and I can’t even imagine what he would be like without it.  He had a wonderful teacher that made reading, writing, and math (yes, MATH) engaging.  She not only did she provide him with a foundation in these subjects but encouraged him to use his own voice in whatever he was doing.  She basically strengthened his confidence and solidified his identity.  There are of course, other elements in school that was incorporated as well like team building, problem solving, and learning how to respect each other and the environment.  Now, imagine ALL that taken away and placed in the first grade?  I can’t even begin to imagine what that classroom would like look.

I understand the need to balance the budget, but not eliminating kindergarten.  Hell, they took away nap time.  Isn’t that enough?
